Protecting Our Devils
We were requested by the Parks and Wildlife Service to replace a sub-standard gate and motor unit (APC brand purchased from internet) with a new gate and motor drive unit as shown. No quote, just come and do it properly.
If you have heard anything of the Tasmanian Devil facial tumour disease which has wiped out most of the wild devils in Tas, an isolated and ‘free of disease’ population are quarantined on the Tasman Peninsula and this gate is part of the (electric) fence boundary across the isthmus at Dunalley which prevents infected devils from getting on to the peninsula and spreading the disease to the good stock.
The Key Automation motor drive unit was selected for absolute reliability.
The design of the gate was such that we chose perforated metal (2.0mm holes @ 3.00mm centres) which reduced the wind loading but prevented the devils from climbing over. I then used Qtron QT1000 radio remotes with high gain antenna (from Mobile One in Camden in NSW) and Rx in the motor unit. In this configuration, remotes work from inside a house approx 400m away!
See below forbefore and after photos of new gate.
